With the support of the NYU Liberal Studies Social Impact Grant and gracious donors, KinderEye served Uitvlugt and Stewartville Primary Schools on December 7th, 2023. This outreach provided 38 children from 4th to 6th grade with eyeglasses, 5 students being from Uitvlugt and 33 students being from Stewartville. These schools are located in the Essequibo-Islands West Demerara Region of Guyana, which is located far away from optical offices due to its rural location.
Headmistresses and teachers from each school helped to identify children who expressed trouble seeing the board. This group was then transported to Miracle Vision Care at Parika East Bank Essequibo, an optical office, to receive eye testing, where a total of 38 children received a prescription. These children then got to choose a pair of frames in a color and style of their choice. The glasses come with transition lenses, a strap, and a case perfect for playing outside in the sun.
The following video and photos depict Suraj Hiraman (director and Guyana lead) and Chandani Rahaman (photographer) distributing eyeglasses alongside the Deputy Headmistresses of the schools. The students expressed great gratitude for receiving the eyeglasses, stating that they otherwise would have had to study without seeing well. With the help of NYU, we have ensured that all students at Uitvlugt and Stewartville Primary Schools have an equal opportunity to continue their educational journey, going on to secondary school and beyond, without having the obstacle of poor vision in their way.
